Resistance Recruits Allies

Resistance by definition is self-sabotage. But there’s a parallel peril that must also be guarded against: sabotage by others.
When a writer begins to over come her Resistance –in other words, when she actually starts to write — she may find that those close to her begin acting strage. They may become moody or sullen, they may get sick; they may accuse the awakening writer of “changing,” of “not being the person she was.” The closer these people are to the awakening writer, the more bizarrely they will act and the more emotion they will put behind their actions.
They are trying to sabotage her.
The reason is that they are struggling, consciously or unconsciously, against their own Resistance. The awakening writer’s success becomes a reproach to them. If she can beat these demons, why can’t they?
Often couples or close friends, even entire families, will enter into tacit compacts whereby each individual pledges (unconsciously) to remain mired in the same slough in which she and all her cronies have become so comfortable. The highest treason a crab can commit is to leap for the rim of the bucket.
The awakening artist must be ruthless, not only with herself but with others. Once you make your break, you can’t turn around for your buddy who catches his trouser leg on the barbed wire. The best thing you can do for that friend (and he’d tell you this himself, if he really is your friend) is to get over the wall and keep motating.
The best and only thing that one artist can do for another is to serve as an example and an inspiration.

My recording experiences
•March 27, 2009 • Leave a CommentI just read a very interesting blog, one that I don’t think many people know about. This particular blog is going to chronicle a very sucessful artist’s experiences of recording a 4th album. It’s especially interesting to me because I am currently recording my own songs….. and taking it a little more seriously than I have done in years past.
I have never considered myself a song writer. It’s very new to me. I am very critical of my lyrics and tend to think they are pretty “simple”. But, I guess I just come up with lyrics that “feel” right over the chords and melodies.
Here’s a snippet from that other person’s blog that REALLY made a lot of sense to me:
Even going into the studio with a guitar and a microphone and singing and strumming until I get something worthwhile isn’t conscious enough, because my mind still knows that there’s somebody engineering the recording session and my performance brain will take over and make sure I don’t sing or play anything embarrassing. The work has to be done alone and ahead of time.
So… wish me luck. I’m still writing and hopefully I can come up with 10 or 11 songs that “feel” right. This is going to be a long process because unlike many people that record I don’t have any record label or investors. It’s all me. I’ll try and take some photos and video from the studio from time to time.
Thanks to all the people on YouTube that have kind words to say…

In the Studio

Well it may take me a year, and thousands of dollars out of my own pocket but I am currently recording at Wonderland Studios in Austin, TX. I’m having to finance the studio time and pay the studio musicians myself so this project may span many many months but I think it will work out for the best.
The songs are being produced and engineered by Tim Casterline.
The guitar parts for Over You and Chose are almost complete and I will start on the guitar part of a third song this Friday evening.
